I'm writing this from my couch where I'm currently sat, feet up, face mask on, and coconut oil in my hair. I've been looking forward to doing sweet FA (sweet fuck all) for a very long time and only now just getting the chance to. Why is it that when we get busy, it's always prioritising ourselves that take a back seat first? Or maybe that's just me. I've never been great at consistency (see the sporadic posting in this blog over the years) but I've been *trying* really hard to make an effort with my skin since last year.
But it's not all doom and gloom - I did manage to get into a routine thanks to the godsend that is Plantae (you can watch my everyday morning and evening skincare routine here) and have actually ticked that off from my goals list for 2017 so there's that.
Cut to February 2018 and some part of me is still on holiday mode. Sleeping late, eating crap, just feeling lazy AF. I blame summer. I've never been much of a summer girl and it's just too hot to do anything else other than exist (I mean, I go to work and work really hard too... I say as my boss reads my blog). All this means that I am feeling all out whack, my routines out the door and basically non-existent. I'm a big fan of routines. They keep me centred so to have none lately is really a disservice to myself and the first to go is usually my skincare. Some mornings I just have to hit that snooze button again (and again and again) that I rush out of bed and only have time for the bare minimum shower. Sometimes I just wash my face with water. Sometimes just a cleanser and skip all the other steps.
Is it any wonder that my skin is acting out like a teenager not allowed to use the internet past bedtime?
To inspire myself this evening, I organised and cleaned my shelves and the results are the emergence of all my skincare products, arranged neatly in one place that I can 1.) stare at and admire. 2.) take a photo for the 'gram because it's such a pretty #shelfie and 3.) actually get back into the swing of routines and give my skin a lot more love than I have in weeks. The best part is, is that all these products I already own, so I know that they work and I didn't have to re-spend. My wallet and I are big fans of shopping from your own beauty cupboard.
So without further ado here's The Skincare Edit that I'm committing to using for the next few weeks until my skin regains its routine again.
Chanel Gommage Microperle Eclat - I got this a few weeks after moving to Auckland when I decided to treat myself to a facial at Chanel Britomart. My skin was in such a state back then - stressed, dehydrated and oily at the same time badly needed some TLC. Exfoliating wasn't part of my routine then because let's be honest, my skincare 'routine' involved just washing my face at that stage so this was one of the items I purchased that night. I use this twice a week now and even try to stick to a schedule so it's usually a sunday depending if I used a face mask or not (I either mask or exfoliate and never both) and again midweek. I love love love the texture of this because unlike the scrubs I've used in the past, this isn't super grainy and rough. It's kind of like a gel with little exfoliators in it! Definitely need to moisturise after this, though. Because I've been half-assing this lately and not really doing the proper routine, I've really started to notice how different products help each other be the best they can be #girlssupportinggirls.
Christian Dior Gentle Toning Lotion with Velvet Peony Extract - My first Dior skincare product ever purchased and something I keep coming back to! I use these a few times a week, usually after a mask or whenever I exfoliate. It smells divine and I feel like it's one of those products that makes you feel extra special (let's be honest, anything Dior will have that effect on me!) AND the pink bottle looks so pretty on the shelf too.
Manuka Doctor Rejuvenating Face Mask - I got this in my goodie bag from Serendipity Ave's party last year and have been using it ever since! I like that it absorbs quickly in the skin and how the texture is so soft. Almost mousse-like, I'd say. Mmm. Mousse. Chocolate mousse! Also this mask has manuka honey in it. I'm a fan!
Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm - I'm obsessed with watching other people's skincare routine and I remember a few years ago, cleansing balms started to infiltrate the Youtube beauty world. Me being an impressionable adult (I still am TBH), I rushed to my local Farmers to get me one and I saw that Trilogy just launched this product. I've been using it ever since, and is my go-to product whenever I've got make-up on. I use this as my first cleanse though and really massage it onto my skin to melt the day's face away. Afterwards, I go in with one of my Plantae cleansers for my second cleanse. This balm is so good and lasts for ages, though. Freaking great price too!
Lush Grease Lightning Spot Treatment - For when the pimples have come to stay. I've got a few of them lately - unsurprising really, given my crap diet and sleeping schedule lately - and this is helping a bit. I'm almost out though and I'm keen to try the Mario Badescu spot treatment once I finish this.
Plantae Skincare - I honestly cannot thank these guys enough for getting me into a proper routine! It's still my current everyday routine and it took me a long time to really get into a routine and find products that work for me. I'm abusy lazy girl who doesn't have much time to get ready in the morning, and I love that my whole routine takes me 10 minutes max, and the products are so lightweight and controls my excessively oily skin. You can watch my everyday routine and see my complete set of Plantae products here if you want to know more!
The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Face Mask - Not gonna lie, the first time I tried this, I didn't get the memo that it's an 'instantly cooling' mask that gives you an odd but nice tingle. So when I put it on and felt the immediate effects of this, I panicked, rushed to the shower, and hurriedly tried to take it off because I thought I was having a reaction to it! I was like, I gotta return this mask it's awful on me. I should have done a patch test! Then I read the packaging and it it clicked. I gave it another chance the next day and I was HOOKED. I especially love the colour - everytime I put it on, I listen to Defying Gravity and pretend I'm part of Wicked the musical.
Lush Eau Roma Face Mist - I love face mists that smell like roses, and because this one is so affordable, I find myself really really generous in spraying this on me whenever I use it. It's a good size to have in my bag too especially when I need to cool down while I'm out and about this summer.
Chanel Hydra Beauty Eye Gel - This is part of my daily routine and I only need the teeniest amount because it's so concentrated. Since it's a gel too, it doesn't feel heavy at all and absorbs quite quickly. Considering how I've been sleeping lately, I think this product deserves all the awards because my undereye area isn't looking as haggard as it should be!
Chanel Hydra Beauty Creme - It's a creme but it feels like a gel. I was scared of it at first because I already had oily skin so why would I put something as heavy as this, right? But I tried it and it worked like a dream. I'm halfway through this bottle and will repurchase again. I used to use it nightly during winter but since trying out Plantae for my everyday routine (not to mention it's summer and my skin doesn't need a heavier moisturiser because of it), I've only been using this twice a week, usually after a mask or exfoliating. It's luxury in the best possible way!
Clarins Pore Minimising Serum - I used to think my pores were insanely huge, but now I actually barely notice them anymore. Maybe I've gotten used to it by now. Maybe it's because I'm older and less conscious about my skin's every flaw. Either way, I'm still using this until I run out. I really like Clarins as a brand and think they're underrated and so elegant, and this is no exception. I use it at night before bed, that extra step to my 'beauty sleep' after toning and before moisturising.
There you have it! Funnily enough, writing this took the same time as the mask needs to be left on (check out my Instastory if you wanna see the weird shit I do while wearing this mask. I may or may not be pretending to be a Broadway star) so I'm off to wash it off and rid my hair of the coconut oil before hopping back into my PJs. Self-care sundays. Let's make this a thing!
