A note on International Women's Day

. Friday, 8 March 2019 .

Reminding myself that change and progress often isn’t comfortable. Women empowerment isn’t all positive vibes. You’ve got to be able to have the hard conversations and those discussions are very uncomfortable. Calling out problematic behavior is hard. Standing up to sexism/racism and speaking up is downright terrifying. So I’m committing to doing more of that. If we want a more inclusive, equal, and diverse world, we have to be willing to fight for it.

I know it’s ridiculous that we need to in the first place. Centuries of systemic issues take a long time to undo but sis we need you. We need your voice. We need you to stand with us. We need you to use your privilege for good because you can. We need you to stand with WOCs, with women living with disabilities, with transgendered women, with working class/low income women, with women who love other women, with women who don’t get visibility and are rarely given a chance and a platform. Let’s not shy away from conflict and challenges.

I’ve said this before but we really cannot rise until all of us rise. If your feminism/women empowerment/girls support girls narrative only apply to people who look like you, to people who you can benefit from, then sis you need to check yourself. We need brands to be more inclusive in their campaigns and in their content. We need to see all types of women dominate our feeds. Tomorrow, after we’ve celebrated and thanked the women in our lives for their support, we get on with it. We can do better this year. We need to.

And we can’t do this without you.

Balance for better. However way we interpret this year’s theme, I hope our actions will always be rooted in kindness, compassion, and empathy. Don’t be afraid to take up space in this world. You are enough, sis. Happy International Women’s Day! Now let’s get to work.

On a more personal note, I wasn’t feeling confident in this outfit this morning and felt like I was too big to wear pretty things but then I thought fuck it, just do it. Thank you to Evo AKA Island Girl Blogger for being my Insta-bae. Thanks for capturing me just as I am!

P.S. I wrote an ode to some of my favourite TV Heroines over on KimberleyCrossman.com. Check it out here x
